What is AI visibility?

AI visibility describes how your business appears in answers from tools such as ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Your name might be mentioned, a page might be linked as a source, or your service might be described. These are different outcomes. Check both whether your business appears and whether the answer describes it accurately and helps an interested reader reach the right page.

The opportunity here is to reach people who understand their own needs but don't know you yet. When you explain your service clearly, people can more easily understand what you do and reach you more prepared. Just mentioning your name is not enough; it is also important that your business is described correctly and that the relevant person can easily reach you. We explained the concepts in our SEO and GEO guide. In this article, we look at what you can control and improve on your site.

Start with a decision your customer needs to make

Select your important service page. What should the person reading this page be able to decide about? For example, a company considering a custom CRM may wonder whether connecting the tools it uses will be enough.

Ask your team what questions come up most in calls and emails: Who is the service suitable for? What's included? What affects the price? What does the customer need to prepare? Build the page around these questions. Answer directly first, then explain the conditions, benefits, and limitations.

In the CRM example, you can explain when disorganised customer records cause problems, which integrations you will look into, and in which cases an off-the-shelf product might be sufficient. This gives the writer a clear brief to work from.

Describe your experience with concrete examples

Instead of general promises, give details that the reader can evaluate. What job will you do, where will your responsibilities begin and end? If you are describing your approach with a project, describe the previous situation, the work you did, and how you measured the result you share. Use client images and documents only if you have permission to publish them.

You may not have a published project story yet. In this case, you can explain how you worked with a sample scope of work, project summary, or comparison of options. If the example is fictional, state so.

It should be clear who or which organisation prepared the article. Include links to information that requires sources. Review the text when your service changes, the resource becomes stale, or customers ask the same point over and over again. The purpose of the update is to provide the reader with a better understanding of the topic.

Check access and platform preferences

Ask your technical team to check the chosen page for indexing restrictions, blocked crawlers and security challenges that prevent access. Important service information should be available as readable text. Confirm that internal links lead to the intended page and that its main address is consistent.

For Google, check indexing, snippet eligibility and the Search generative AI setting in Search Console. Inclusion is the default; a property can inherit its parent’s choice. Eligibility does not guarantee an appearance.

For ChatGPT, OAI-SearchBot serves search, while GPTBot concerns model training. Their controls are independent, so allowing search does not require allowing training. Check both crawl rules and firewall access for the search bot.

Access conditions for different search services may not be the same. Check for a specific platform and use up-to-date official documentation. Granting access to a service does not prove that another platform will use the same page. When changing crawl settings, consider private areas of the site and security needs separately.

Google does not specify any specific additional optimisation requirements to appear in AI features; existing SEO fundamentals remain valid. Buying an unfamiliar plugin should not be your starting point. Start with accessible, accurate and useful content.

Describe the service, make it easy to reach you

Compare your services page to other parts of your site. Are your business name, areas you serve, and contact information consistent everywhere? Whenever a service changes, also update related posts and links. If you are using structured data, the information contained therein should match what the visitor can see on the page.

Readers can access one of your articles directly without ever seeing your home page. So link to the relevant service and explain what happens after someone contacts you. Check that the text is easy to read and the communication options are easy to use on the phone. At Pixel, we evaluate content, design and technical structure together.

Eight-point checklist for AI visibility

Open the page you selected and check these items. Identify a concrete change and responsible person for each item you cannot tick. Focus first on issues that block access or prevent the customer from understanding the service.

You can save the review findings in your own working document. The list is prepared to evaluate the clarity and usability of the page.

Measure Google visibility with the right report

Record a baseline before publishing changes: the page you are improving, its current visibility and the enquiries it receives. Keep brand mentions, source links, visits and enquiries as separate measures.

Search Console’s Generative AI performance report covers impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It offers page, country, device and date breakdowns. It is not a report of AI clicks, sales or visibility across every assistant.

Choose a review period that suits your traffic. Compare the same page and similar periods, then use the findings to decide what deserves attention. A movement in impressions is a starting point for investigation; it does not explain the cause on its own.

Read Bing citations alongside visits and enquiries

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows citations across supported Copilot, Bing and selected partner experiences. Its sampled, aggregated data includes cited pages and grounding phrases, which are not complete user questions. Citations do not represent clicks or rankings.

Alongside those observations, review identifiable AI referrals in your analytics and the enquiries they lead to. Referral information can be missing, so avoid assigning unexplained traffic to AI. A short “How did you find us?” question can add context.

Discuss enquiry quality with the people who handle it. Were visitors asking about the right service? Did they understand the scope? Those answers help connect visibility work to a business need.

Measure visibility and business outcome separately

Mentioning your brand in a response, citing your page, receiving a visit, and receiving a valid request are different events. Follow these under separate headings in reporting. Seeing the brand name in a screenshot does not indicate new customer acquisition. A source link does not necessarily lead to a click either.

Check the current description of what the report offered by the platform you use covers. Concepts such as impressions, citations, visits, and user questions are different types of data. Do not assume that numbers presented with the same name are calculated in the same way across platforms. Include definition and period information in the comparison.

You can review visits whose source can be seen in analytics tools. Referral information may not always be complete. Do not attribute all traffic of unexplained origin to artificial intelligence. A neutral question such as “How did you find us?” can provide additional context, although these answers are not a complete measurement system.

Get input from the team responding to requests. Are people asking for a suitable service? Do they understand what is included, and what do they already know? These observations connect content work to real need. It prevents visibility work from being limited to platform screens only.

Review AI answers directly

Prepare a small list of the questions your customers ask when making decisions and use the same list in the checks. When reviewing the AI response, record the platform, date, language, question, and source link provided. Is your business described correctly? Does the linked page really answer the question? Make a note of these.

These records are observations; results may vary by user and session. If you see the same misunderstanding repeated, investigate your site for outdated, unclear or contradictory information. Save the correction and check again later. The fact that the subsequent response changes does not, by itself, prove that it was the result of your correction.

Develop a customer question into a useful answer

Imagine answering this question for a hypothetical business: “What should we prepare before creating a bilingual business website?” Listing the preparations at the start helps, but readers may need more detail before they can make a decision. Content responsibility, translation review, form messages and update process should also be explained.

In answering this question, give the direct requirements first. Then explain why each requirement is important and what could go wrong if it is missing. For example, if there is no approval person for the translation, the publication schedule may become uncertain. Explaining this relationship provides more information than simply saying “professional translation is important.”

Then you can add a sample preparation table. Use the table to compare concise items; do not reduce the whole article to disconnected labels. Paragraphs are needed for the reader to understand the context and examples to see different situations. The main priority should remain that the content said to be written for artificial intelligence should be easily read by humans.

Once the content is complete, re-read the question. Does the article really answer that question, or does it turn into general service promotion? Remove unnecessary paragraphs and add missing conditions. Useful content doesn't consist of repeating the same keyword in different formats.

Give related articles distinct roles

Distributing the same question across multiple pages with minor title changes can make content management difficult. First, check whether there is an article covering the topic on your current site. Sometimes it is more meaningful to improve the existing guide rather than opening a new page.

For example, the cost guide may address budget items, the project preparation guide may address required inputs, and the technical checklist may address pre-release testing. They can link to each other; however, they do not need to retell all the details in every article. Thus, the reader can more easily understand where to find the answer to which question.

The text of the internal link should also describe the subsequent content. Instead of “read more”, a contextual expression such as “multilingual site preparation” can be used. When adding a link, consider whether the reader will actually need that detail. Do not redirect to irrelevant pages to increase the number.

Content development plan for the first month

In the first week, you can choose a service and collect customer questions. In the next step, check the accuracy and clarity of the page. Then add an answer to a missing decision question or describe a real project example. This plan is not a promise of visibility results in a month, but an editorial example of breaking the work into manageable pieces.

Save the published change and its date. Then compare your observations with the same questions. Take into account that external conditions and platform responses may vary. The goal is not to attribute every movement to your own work, but to find repeated misinformation and missing content.

Designate a content owner so that the work can be maintained. When the service changes, review old descriptions, linked articles and different language versions. Being a reliable source of information is not just about writing the initial text well, but also about making sure it remains accurate.

Provide variety in the sample question list

Don't use questions that only include your brand name for observation. Take examples of different decision stages, such as service selection, cost, preparation and suitability. Getting a correct answer when asked about your brand name does not mean that someone who does not know your brand will find you when searching for the same service.

Keep questions close to real customer language. A prompt with lots of artificially added keywords may not be representative of day-to-day research. When reviewing the same question in different languages, check that the meaning and the reader's need match. The wording does not have to follow the source sentence exactly.

Make separate notes of correct and incorrect information for each observation. It may be premature to say that the entire content strategy has failed just because the business name is not mentioned. On the other hand, if incorrect service or outdated contact information is constantly displayed, there is a concrete issue to fix. Prioritise traceable and verifiable problems.

Choose the first improvement based on your findings

Evaluate your checklist along with your customers' questions. Choose which change will work first: clarifying the scope of service, adding a real example, fixing an access issue, or making communication easier. Determine who will do the work and note what changed when the update was published.

Frequently asked questions

Is writing short answers enough?

A brief introduction can make it easier for the reader to find the main answer. But you should not omit the conditions and examples necessary for the decision. Give the clear answer first, then explain the scope. There is no guarantee that a paragraph format will be cited on all platforms.

Should every article title be a question?

No. The title format should suit the purpose of the content. A question can work well when the article answers it directly. A descriptive title may suit a process guide, project review or comparison better. The priority is natural phrasing and a coherent explanation.

How quickly does AI visibility improve?

There is no single reliable time period for every site and platform. Access corrections and content improvements can be checked on delivery; visibility requires observation over time. Decide what will change, what will be measured, and when the findings will be evaluated.
